For a cinematographer, the process is a constant whirlwind of thoughts. From the moment you read a script to the day you’re on set, every element—art direction, costumes, and lighting—plays into an ongoing creative struggle.
One of the most important considerations is the color palette. Staying aligned with the production designer and costume designer from day one is vital, as their choices can either enhance or disrupt the film’s visual identity.
On Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, I was fortunate to work with a brilliant team that kept bringing innovative ideas. My role began with assembling a first look board—something my crew and I created as a visual guide. Once we shared it with director Santosh Singh and he approved it, that board became the foundation of our color scheme.
From a camera standpoint, Santosh Singh made an unconventional choice: he wanted to avoid standard over-the-shoulder angles during dialogue. This decision worked organically, since Vikrant Massey’s character is blind and Shanaya’s character is blindfolded for her role preparation. With no traditional eyelines to follow, we had the freedom to break away from established framing rules.
I credit Santosh for his collaborative approach. He provides complete creative freedom and only intervenes if something strays from the narrative. Ideas are always encouraged, provided they serve the story.
For my focus puller, however, this setup was extremely demanding. Since the actors couldn’t see, they couldn’t always hit precise marks, forcing him to rely on instinct and visual judgment to get the focus right.
Vikrant was an absolute delight to shoot. He instinctively gauges lighting, understands lens choice, and adapts his movements seamlessly to dolly shots—making my job smoother. Shanaya, too, delivered with precision, following direction flawlessly. She not only performs brilliantly but also reflects light beautifully, almost as if it comes naturally to her.
Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan was both a challenge and a joy. If given the opportunity, I would happily reunite with this team again for future projects.
